somewhere, something down the hall (2021)
Black string, neon rope lights and hooks. Dimensions of the room / 10’ x 8’ x 71/2’
somewhere, something down the hall was an impermanent installation piece that grew and then eventually was cut down in the spare room of my house, down the hallway on the upper floor. Composed of black string and yellow neon rope lights, the piece inhabited the space over the course of a two month long period, as it became a place that grew autonomous over time. The concept going into the piece was to investigate building volume in a 3D space using string across the length of the room, with a central pillar of deep yellow light that would draw the viewer in. From the outside, the light seduced them into a room that was almost overwhelmed with the piece, as it grew to inhabit the space and resulted in a feeling of trespassing for the viewer, as if they entered a space already belonging to something else. I created a space that grew to push me out, when what I wanted was to build a space that I found comfort in within my own house. Once it was completed, it only remained for a few days before being cut down, so that the room could become a new space with a new piece inhabiting it.
